Frequently Asked Questions

How does telehealth work?

We’ll send you a secure link for your private session. All you’ll need is a camera and a mic! That means you can use your iPhone, iPad, laptop, or desktop, whatever set up you have—that’s the beauty of telehealth, your counselor can be wherever you are!

You’ll want to make sure your space is private and secure for your confidentiality—that means just you, out of ear shot from anyone else. Sessions can be done in cars, bedrooms, living room couches, lunch breaks at the office, walks outside, and, to be honest, most telehealth therapists have been inside their client’s closets, too (privacy from the kids is hard, no judgement here!)

Will my insurance cover telehealth?

Right now is a perfect time to utilize telehealth as many insurance companies are allowing clients to utilize this service and their copays for in-office visits, even if telehealth was not originally a part of their plan; however, you’ll want to make sure that your counselor is in network with your provider and that you have telehealth coverage past the COVID-19 pandemic for consistency. Unfortunately, insurance companies can change the rules on us at any time, so its better to be safe your coverage to avoid unexpected fees.

Will you offer in-person sessions in the future?

At this time there are no plans to offer in-person sessions in an office setting in the near future; when and if this changes clients will be informed and they will have the option to do in person or telehealth, whichever is best for them at the time or a combination.

What qualifies someone to be an LPC?

We don’t get this question enough! Here’s the wild ride your counselor had to go through to get these 3 little letters: 4 years (120+ hours) BS in Psychology, 3 years (60+ hours) in MS in Counseling school, a 100 hour graduate counseling practicum, 600 unpaid clinical internship hours, 3 national state exams, 78 weeks of paid weekly supervision under a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, and 3000 (mostly unpaid) clinical post-graduate client hours….And this doesn’t count all our hours of specialized training.

We really love counseling and we are REALLY qualified to do it!

Can my Rosewater counselor evaluate for or prescribe medications?

LPCs without a medical degree cannot prescribe medications. Your counselor may recommend that you get an evaluation from a psychiatrist or other medical provider if you are struggling with certain symptoms that medication could help alleviate in conjunction with your therapy sessions. Rosewater Counseling & Wellness is happy to refer you to the proper professionals for these services; you also have the option to allow your counselor to be an advocate for you and keep in touch with your doctors as needed, or if desired.

How long until I am “better”?

We follow the research and recommend at least 10 sessions for most clients to truly get started in their healing journey, however, every client and their situation is different. Some clients need weeks, some need months, and some need years. It really depends on what issues you are working on, how invested you are in the process, and the connection you build with your counselor. Your counselor will routinely check in with you regarding your progress and next steps.

Will I have “homework?”

That’s totally up to you! Your counselor will help you explore what works for you.. Do you like reading books? Do you like journaling? Are you open to an art activity? Are you more of an external processor? Your counselor may also recommend activities or homework to you such as practicing grounding exercises, engaging in self-care, or completing a task or goal you’ve set for yourself—but at the end of the day, counseling is what you make it and what you put into it. We promise that if you invest in your care you’ll see faster results! But that work looks different for everyone.
